First Pages Roundtable Reviews

First pages reviews work best for projects you're just starting on, gauging interest in, or testing out opening scenes. First Pages Roundtable Reviews will take place on Friday, September 29 from 12:30pm - 2:30pm at UAA Rasmuson Hall.

How it works:

  • Register: Check the "First Pages Manuscript Review" selection on your conference registration.
  • What to Bring: Attendees should bring ten (10) copies of the first 500 words of their project with them to the conference. The author will read their first pages aloud, then the faculty will have ten minutes to discuss the work before they open up discussion to other roundtable attendees.
  • Format: Please format your first pages with 12 point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, double spaced with your contact information on the first page.

Written or One-on-One 5 Page Manuscript Reviews

Critiques of up to the first five pages of a manuscript plus optional single-page query letter or synopsis will be offered by a selection of our conference faculty. These reviews will be discussed in 15-minute one-on-one sessions during the conference for in-person attendees. Five page reviews work best for complete and polished manuscripts or for authors seeking an industry professional's review on their project's opening, style, plot, and pacing.

Pricing for Manuscript Excerpt Reviews starts at $65 for members of AWG / RWA / SCBWI, or $75 for Non-Members.

How it works:
  • Register: Check the "Optional Manuscript Review" selection on your conference registration. Up to three (3) manuscript excerpts per attendee will be accepted. These may all be registered with one faculty member, with three faculty members, or a combination of the above.
  • All manuscript review material must be submitted no later than midnight Friday, August 18, 2023.
Preparing your manuscript excerpt for submission:
    • First page: a one-page, single-spaced synopsis or query letter, which includes your name and contact information. This is REQUIRED.
    • Subsequent pages: up to the first five pages of your manuscript. Manuscript text should be formatted with 12 point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, and double spaced. The first and subsequent pages should be saved as ONE file. Include your name, the project's title, and page number at the top of all manuscript pages.
    • Picture book illustrators: may submit up to five pages of a picture book dummy or a picture book text with sample illustrations
    • Graphic Novels: For writers only, please submit the first chapter of the script. For Illustrators/authors, please submit the first ten pages (the sample pages). Both should be accompanied by a full synopsis of the story.
    • How to name your file: Name your file as a combination of your name and the name of the submission. For instance, a submission entitled Glass Houses by John Throwstones would be named: Throwstones, Glass Houses.docx. Save all material for each manuscript submission as a SINGLE .doc or .docx document (REMEMBER: your optional query or synopsis and manuscript pages must be in the same document). NO PDFs ACCEPTED unless submitting a picture book or graphic novel dummy.
    • Send your pages: Send all submissions as separate email attachments. In the subject line of your email, type “Conference Manuscript Review Submission.” In the body of the e-mail, clearly type your name as you used for your conference registration (please don't use your pseudonym, unless it is the same name you used for your conference registration) and note which faculty you registered with for your critique. If you registered for multiple critiques, please denote which manuscript should be sent to which faculty. Please note that NO text of your email will be sent to the faculty, only your attached document(s).

Send your submissions by midnight Friday, August 18 to

    admin@alaskawritersguild.com

Submissions received after this deadline will not be sent to faculty for critique, and your fee(s) will not be refunded.
